Healthy Mind Session exclusively for the research scholars

Uttar Pradesh desk Lucknow (R L Pandey). In continuation of Prof. Alok Kumar Rai, Vice Chancellor, University of Lucknow’s endeavour’s for the mental well-being of students and research scholars of the University, the Department of Chemistry in association with the Counselling and Guidance Cell organized a Healthy Mind Session exclusively for the research scholars of the Department on May 22, 2024 at 11:00 AM. In the beginning Dr. Amrita Srivastava, Department Coordinator, Counselling and Guidance Unit mentioned the importance of such sessions for students

. Thereafter Prof. Maitryee Pridarshini, Coordinator of the Happy Thinking Lab emphasized the importance of acceptance and gratitude in life. Then Dr. Vaishali Saxena, Director of the Counselling and Guidance Cell mentioned the importance of managing stress in our daily life and was thankful to the Department of Chemistry for organizing such a session. She invited the students and faculty members present to the Counselling and Guidance Cell and the Happy Thinking Lab for learning more about managing stress.

The session was conducted by Prof. Anil Mishra, Head of the Department of Chemistry who delivered a lecture on Handling the NMR and Stress connection – Made Easy. In this session, Prof. Mishra correlated the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy, a physical tool to study the magnetic properties of nucleus under the influence of a strong magnetic field and radio-frequency with stress.
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) is a physical tool to study the magnetic properties of nucleus under the influence of a strong magnetic field and radio-frequency. Initially the basic details of NMR spectroscopy was explained, starting from the importance of free spin in the nucleus up to the theory of multi-dimensional NMR and MRI.

Studying about NMR and interpreting the spectra could be stressful. Stress is responsible for causing several diseases from common cold to cancer and COVID infections.  There may be multiple reasons to be stressed and it is necessary for a person to evaluate and find out the reason. It is therefore important to first understand what is stress and then find out ways of how it can be controlled.

Stress does this by weakening our immune system and making our body prone to them. Stress starts from worry which is caused if we are unable to solve the problems. This leads to anxiety and then to stress. Stress is just an accumulation of worry. If we could stop it at the worry level stress can be controlled. There are several ways to control worry. In the Practical Approach emphasis is on how easily a person can manage his/her own life by following some basic principles which we usually tend to forget. These are Acceptance and Gratitude. Usually we do not remember these when it comes to our own problems. Here methods and examples will be given as to how these principles can be easily applied for one’s own betterment. People apply acceptance unknowingly plenty of times but the important thing is to apply it knowingly and this will help in having a life with lesser stress. Meditation also plays an important role in controlling our thoughts. Conscious Breathing, the simplest form of meditation also plays an important role in reducing stress. Overall these simple methods can be used to manage stress in our life and make it more peaceful.

All the students present in the session were delighted to listen this session, which not only developed their understanding about NMR spectroscopy, but also boost-up their moral to cope-up with the stressful conditions. Dr. Arpana Godbole Coordinator of the Counselling and Guidance cell while proposing a vote of thanks mentioning that students should learn from such events to make their life stress free. The session coordinated by Dr. Om Prakash and Dr. Sunil Kumar Rai of the department was attended by Faculty members and research scholars of the department.
