CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Lucknow, organizes training programs from time to time on the subject of cultivation, primary processing, and marketing of medicinal, aromatic plants for the country's farmers. In this series, today on 27.06.2024, with joint efforts of CSIR-CIMAP Lucknow, Manipur Government, Sanganeria Foundation, Ultra International, and Hindu College, Delhi, a two-day training program is being organized for the displaced women of Manipur on the subject of production and value addition of essential oils. Wherein, 30 women are participating in this training program from different districts of Manipur.

 
In this program, Dr. Prabodh Kumar Trivedi, Director, CSIR-CIMAP, welcomed the participants and addressed the details of the work done by CSIR-CIMAP in the States of North-East region Under the Aroma mission project. Dr. Trivedi informed that the work done by CSIR-CIMAP Lucknow under Aroma Mission in Ukhrul and Kakching districts of Manipur, like lemongrass, has been cultivating within the area of 20 acres and two distillation units were installed in 2022, which was benefiting many farmers in these areas. In the program, thirty tribal women (kuki, Maitiek and Naga) of Manipur decided to make efforts for entrepreneurship development in the area of herbal formulations with CSIR-CIMAP Lucknow.


Dr. Alok Kalra, an ex-chief scientist, said that the local problems in Manipur may be solved through this training. Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Sr. Pr. Scientist cum PI of Aroma mission said that CSIR-CIMAP, Lucknow, is carrying out an Aroma Mission across the country, and covered more than 36000 hectares under this mission program.

Dr. Ramesh Kumar Srivastava said Manipur is suitable for cultivating Peppermint, geranium, lemongrass, and salvia. In this sequence, through the efforts of scientists of CSIR-CIMAP, Lucknow, improved varieties of medicinal and aromatic plants have been developed for the farmers, providing more yield and benefits to the farmers. The farmers of these clusters have been extensively involved in cultivating aromatic crops, which is why today India is becoming self-reliant in producing and exporting lemongrass and palmarosa oil. Further, the program is organized as per the training schedule and follows the technical session. Various scientists, technical officers, researchers, etc. of CSIR-CIMAP were present on this occasion. All the participants in the program are graduates.
