Japanese Delegation Visits University to Promote Modernized Farming Techniques in Collaboration with Uttar Pradesh Government
Uttar Pradesh desk Lucknow (R L Pandey).A delegation from Japan primarily from College of Agriculture, Tamagawa University, Japan visited the University of Lucknow with the aim to foster international collaboration and promote cutting-edge farming methods, particularly soil-free farming using specialised polymer sheets. This innovative farming technique is designed to create a disease-free environment for plants to thrive, while also being eco-friendly and sustainable.

The delegation’s visit aligns with several initiatives undertaken by the Government of Uttar Pradesh, to modernize agricultural practices and enhance productivity across the state. By adopting soil-free farming methods, farmers can significantly reduce the dependency on pesticides and fertilizers, leading to healthier produce and a reduced environmental footprint. The soil-free farming technology, developed and perfected in Japan, utilizes specially designed polymer sheets that support plant growth without the need for soil, eliminating many soil-borne diseases. This method is particularly beneficial for high-value crops and urban farming, offering a sustainable solution to the challenges faced by traditional farming systems.

During the visit, the delegation engaged in discussions with University officials and faculty, focusing on ways to implement this advanced agricultural technology in India. They explored opportunities for research collaboration, knowledge exchange, and technology transfer between Japan and India. A key highlight of the visit was the potential to empower students to become 'agri-preneurs,' fostering innovation in agriculture and offering new opportunities for India's youth in the sector.

They also discussed training interested students in research and extension activities. The initiative represents a significant step towards sustainable and eco-friendly agriculture, which is a core focus of both the Indian and Japanese governments. "This visit is especially important in light of the upcoming third campus of university of Lucknow that plans to have faculty of Agriculture. Also many of our faculty are globally recognised for their work in agriculturally important plants and insects. This visit will work long term benefits for the university" said Prof. Alok Kumar Rai, Vice Chancellor, University of Lucknow.
