To overcome this self-defeating behaviour, a research on “Reducing Procrastination among Adolescent Students” was done by Jaya Mishra, Research Scholar under supervision of Dr.Archana Shukla, Department of Psychology, University of Lucknow.
In the study, 200 Adolescent Students were selected to assess the levels of Procrastination and its cognitive components Self-esteem, Irrational Beliefs and Decision-making Ability.23 students who were high on Procrastination, and Irrational Beliefs and low on self-esteem and decision-making ability, went through counselling sessions based on “Cognitive Behavioural Therapy” to reduce Procrastination for 21 days in which students learned certain techniques like just 5- minutes, plan rewards, grading, setting time, prime time, prime place are some which students liked.
At the end astonishing results were obtained, in which level of Procrastination was decreased among the students who attended the sessions, which was supported by friend and parents of the students. Procrastination is negatively associated with students’ academic performance therefore, to identify this behavior and using an appropriate psychological intervention is the need of time. Overall, this study is eye-opening research for parents and guardians, whose children often indulge in procrastinating on task, they can take help of psychological therapies to improve personality growth and overall wellbeing of their children.
