Radiodiagnosis Department Celebrates 38th Foundation Day with CME on Functional MRI
Lucknow desk (R L Pandey). The Department of Radiodiagnosis at King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, commemorated its 38th Foundation Day on December 16, 2024, with a prestigious event that included a CME session on Functional MRI. The program showcased advancements in radiology and celebrated the department's achievements.

The CME featured renowned speakers. Dr. Mona Tiwari from the Institute of Neurosciences, Kolkata, presented on the "Basics of Functional MRI Physics, Clinical Applications, and Case Examples," while Dr. Shriram Varadharajan from Kauvery Hospital, Chennai, delivered an insightful lecture on the "Clinical Applications of Functional Magnetic Resonance and Diffusion Tensor Imaging."

Functional MRI (fMRI) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) are advanced neuroimaging tools widely used in clinical practice. fMRI aids in pre-surgical brain mapping, identifying critical motor, sensory, and language areas to guide safe brain surgeries, and evaluates brain activity in conditions like epilepsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and neurodegenerative disorders. It also offers insights into psychiatric conditions such as depression and schizophrenia.

DTI focuses on white matter tract imaging, essential for pre-surgical planning and detecting microscopic injuries in TBI, stroke, and multiple sclerosis. It is also useful in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injuries, and developmental disorders like autism. Together, fMRI and DTI improve diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring for better neurological and psychiatric patient outcomes.

The event was graced by Chief Guest Prof. Soniya Nityanand, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of KGMU, and Guests of Honour Prof. B.K. Ojha, Chief Medical Superintendent, and Prof. Suresh Kumar, Medical Superintendent, GM & AH, KGMU. Prof. Anit Parihar, Head of the Radiodiagnosis Department, played a pivotal role in organizing the event and presented the department's annual report, highlighting its achievements, innovations, and ongoing commitment to excellence in radiology.
