Jamnagar (India) | 28th April 2026:

In a powerful move that bridges international borders and conservation ethics, Anant Mukesh Ambani, Founder of Vantara and Executive Director of Reliance Industries Limited, has formally petitioned the Colombian government to save 80 hippopotamuses currently facing a "lethal removal" order.

Ambani has proposed a humane, science-led alternative: a massive translocation project to bring the animals to a permanent, state-of-the-art home at Vantara in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

The Crisis in the Magdalena River

The population of hippos in Colombia—descendants of animals introduced in the 1980s—has grown to approximately 200. Classified as an invasive species due to their impact on biodiversity and community safety, Colombian authorities recently authorized the culling of 80 individuals. This decision sparked global debate, prompting Vantara to step in with a fully resourced solution.

A Global Leader in Compassion

In a letter to Irene Vélez Torres, Colombia’s Minister of Environment, Ambani—the youngest and first Asian recipient of the prestigious Global Humane Award—emphasized the moral weight of the situation. These eighty hippos did not choose where they were born, nor did they create the circumstances they now face," said Anant Mukesh Ambani. "They are living, sentient beings, and if we have the ability to save them through a safe and humane solution, we have a responsibility to try."

The Vantara Proposal: Science Meets Humanity

Vantara is not merely offering a home; it is offering a comprehensive, end-to-end operational plan. The proposal to the Colombian authorities includes:

  • Expert Leadership: Specialized veterinary and capture teams to ensure the safety of both humans and animals.

  • Advanced Logistics: Sophisticated transport and biosecurity protocols for the cross-continental move.

  • Naturalistic Habitat: A purpose-designed environment in Gujarat that mirrors the critical features of the hippos’ current riverine home.

  • Lifelong Care: Guaranteed medical and nutritional support for all 80 hippos for the duration of their lives.

India’s Role in Global Conservation

This initiative underscores India’s emerging status as a leader in large-scale, science-driven wildlife solutions. Ambani noted that "compassion and public safety are not opposing forces," asserting that careful planning can protect local Colombian ecosystems without the need for lethal measures.

Next Steps

Implementation of this massive rescue mission awaits formal assessment by Colombian officials and the securing of all necessary international, Colombian, and Indian government clearances. Vantara has requested a temporary stay on the lethal orders while their proposal is reviewed.
