BCCI Confirms Goa as Venue for IPL 2027 Auction
IPL 2027 Auction : The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Goa will host the auction for the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The auction is scheduled to take place in December, with the event expected to be held around the middle of the month.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed on Wednesday, September 23, that the auction will be conducted in Goa. While the exact date has not yet been officially disclosed, the auction is likely to be held between December 14 and 16.
Since the 2027 IPL auction is expected to be a relatively small-scale event, it will likely be completed in a single day.
IPL Auction Returns to India
The decision marks a return of the IPL auction to India after three consecutive editions were held overseas. In recent years, the auctions were hosted in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi.
According to the BCCI, the decision to hold the auction in India followed requests from a majority of IPL franchises. The next mega auction, scheduled for the following year, could potentially be hosted outside India.
The BCCI was also looking for a five-star hotel capable of accommodating more than 100 guests, including representatives from all 10 IPL franchises. Goa has been selected after meeting the venue requirements.
Goa Has Hosted IPL Auction Before
Goa is not hosting an IPL auction for the first time. The state previously hosted the auction for the second IPL season in 2009. That auction witnessed some of the biggest bids of the time, with England stars Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff each attracting bids of USD 1.55 million. Pietersen was purchased by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, while Flintoff joined Chennai Super Kings.
Another memorable moment came during the bidding for Bangladesh all-rounder Mashrafe Mortaza. Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings were involved in an intense bidding battle, with KKR eventually acquiring Mortaza for USD 600,000 from a base price of USD 50,000. Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan was present at the auction table representing Kolkata Knight Riders.
WPL Auction to Be Held in Kochi
Meanwhile, the Women's Premier League (WPL) auction is scheduled to take place in Kochi on October 28. The IPL 2027 auction will therefore return to India after a three-year overseas run, with Goa set to host the event in December.
