Cinematic Milestone: Santosh Davakhar’s ‘Gondhal’ Becomes World’s First Film with 100% Visual Dubbing Across 7 Languages
Mumbai: Marathi cinema is breaking global barriers with a technological masterstroke. Director Santosh Davakhar’s latest cinematic offering, ‘Gondhal’, has officially made history by becoming the world's first feature film to achieve 100% visual dubbing across seven languages.
Using high-tech AI and VFX, the film ensures that characters' lip movements are perfectly synchronized with the dubbed audio, offering an authentic viewing experience in Marathi, Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
A Global Ambassador of Indian Culture
Rooted in the rustic charm of rural Maharashtra, Gondhal is more than just a movie; it is a deep dive into tradition, folk culture, and raw human emotion. Its journey from local soil to the global stage has been paved with prestigious accolades:
-
FIPRESCI Honor: The film earned recognition from the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), a rare milestone for regional Indian cinema since the institution’s founding in 1926.
-
IFFI Recognition: After a six-year hiatus for the genre, Gondhal brought pride to India at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
-
Oscar Race: Building on its international festival success, the film is now set to enter the race for India’s official entry to the Academy Awards (Oscars).
The Tech Behind the Magic
The transition from a regional film to a multilingual global product involved a rigorous six-month VFX process. While visual dubbing (altering lip-sync via AI) is usually reserved for lead actors in big-budget blocks, Gondhal is the first to apply this comprehensively to every character on screen. Our aim has always been to showcase Maharashtra’s rich traditions to the world," says Director Santosh Davakhar. "With visual dubbing technology, viewers in every language will experience the film in a way that feels authentic and emotionally connected."
Powerhouse Talent and Soulful Music
The film features a stellar ensemble cast, including Kishore Kadam, Ishita Deshmukh, and Yogesh Soman. Adding to its grandeur is the musical score by the legendary Ilaiyaraaja, with powerful vocals by Ajay Gogavale, ensuring that the film's auditory experience is as rich as its visual innovation.
Release Buzz
Following overwhelming responses at special screenings in Mumbai and Bengaluru, the makers are ready for a digital blitz. Dialogue promos for all seven languages are scheduled to drop on YouTube by the end of April, giving global audiences a first look at this technological marvel.
Gondhal is produced under the banner of Davakhar Films by Santosh Davakhar, with Diksha Davakhar serving as co-producer.
