Lucknow desk (R L Pandey).On 16 September, 2024 University of Lucknow organized its 67 convocation at historic arts quadrangle. Smt. Anandiben Patel, Hon’ble Governor of Uttar Pradesh and Chancellor, University of Lucknow presided over the function. In this convocation, Dr. Vijay Pandurang Bhatkar, the Father of PARAM supercomputer and Former Chancellor, Nalanda University was Chief Guest, while Shri Yogendra Updahyaya, Cabinet Minister, Higher Education, Uttar Pradesh Government was Guest of Honour and Smt. Rajani Tiwari, Minister of State, Higher Education, Uttar Pradesh was special guest. Also, Dr. Nilesh M. Desai, highly acclaimed space scientist and Director, Space application Centre, ISRO was present to whom prestigious Honoris Cause degree was conferred.

On this occasion Prof. Alok Kumar Rai, Vice Chancellor, University of Lucknow extended a heartfelt welcome to all on behalf of the university family. He expressed his warm regards to Honorable Governor of Uttar Pradesh and Chancellor of Lucknow University, Mrs. Anandiben Patel, whose inspiring leadership continues to motivate. Prof. Rai welcomed the Chief Guest, Padma Bhushan Dr. Vijay Pandurang Bhatkar, creator of India’s first supercomputer "Param" and former Chancellor of Nalanda University, as well as the distinguished guest, Mr. Yogendra Upadhyay, Honorable Minister of Higher Education, Uttar Pradesh. He also extended greetings to Mrs. Rajni Tiwari, Minister of State for Higher Education, and Mr. Nilesh Desai, Director of the Space Application Centre, ISRO, who was conferred the honorary D.Litt. degree for his contributions to India's space programs. The Vice Chancellor welcomed esteemed members of the Executive and Academic Councils, faculty, students, alumni, and guests, recognizing the day as a celebration of the students' achievements and the university's continued progress.


In his address Prof. Alok Kumar Rai, Vice Chancellor of Lucknow University, congratulated the graduates as they embark on a new chapter of their lives, underscoring the importance of education in unlocking their full potential. Drawing from the Mahabharata’s Udyoga Parva, Prof. Rai emphasized that the true ornament of education is humility. "Vidya vinayen shobhate," he quoted, adding that education not only imparts knowledge but also instills discipline and humility. He highlighted the timeless wisdom from ancient Indian scriptures, stating that education is unmatched glory, a shelter in adversity, and a guiding force that opens infinite possibilities.


In his speech, Prof. Rai reflected on the transformative impact of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which has allowed institutions to modernize their educational offerings. Lucknow University, being the first to implement the NEP 2020 in India, successfully introduced various programs, including a four-year undergraduate course, a one-year postgraduate program, and policies for credit and student transfers.


"The era we live in is one of coordination and integration," said Prof. Rai, referring to the merging of diverse fields like science, art, and commerce into a unified educational confluence. Lucknow University has responded to this challenge by introducing a variety of modern and professional courses such as part-time Ph.D. and M.Tech. programs, Executive MBA, Business Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning, alongside exploring India’s rich knowledge heritage with courses on Yoga, Jyotirvigyan, and Shaiva philosophy.


Prof. Rai also outlined the university’s strides in digital transformation, with over 350,000 students now having Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) IDs through the Government of India’s "Samarth" portal. On this day, more than 106,000 students’ mark sheets and degrees will be transferred to their DigiLocker accounts. He expressed his pride in Lucknow University achieving NAAC A++ accreditation, UGC Category 1 status, and ranking among the top 100 universities in NIRF 2024, with a nationwide rank of 32nd in the State University category.


Concluding his address, Prof. Rai called upon the graduates to remain inspired by the university's ideals, encouraging them to continue spreading the light of knowledge in society. Quoting from the Kathopanishad, he said, “Arise, awake, and stop not until the goal is reached,” urging the students to carry forward the values and traditions of their alma mater throughout their lives.
In the last, he said that Lucknow University remains committed to fostering an environment of academic excellence and innovation, preparing students to meet the challenges of the future while staying rooted in India’s rich educational heritage.

Hon’ble Minister of State for Higher Education, Uttar Pradesh, Smt. Rajani Tiwari, addressed the graduating students, emphasizing that their achievements are not merely certificates but instruments of change. She encouraged them to pursue any path, whether it be further education, entrepreneurship, or employment, with the deep understanding that they possess the potential to make a significant impact.


Smt. Tiwari highlighted that these students are the future leaders, thinkers, and pioneers who will shape the world in the coming years. She urged them to view challenges as opportunities for growth, to embrace innovation and adaptability, and to be open-minded and resilient in the face of adversity. “The future belongs to those who are not afraid of hard work,” she stated, reminding the students to recognize and value the support of their families, friends, and mentors who have stood by them throughout their journey.


The Minister praised the University of Lucknow for its national and international achievements, acknowledging the institution’s continuous efforts to enhance the quality of education. She pointed out the University's contributions to initiatives like the improvement of Anganwadi centers and expressed her admiration for the leadership of the Vice Chancellor and his team. Smt. Tiwari also recognized the role of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in providing a platform for educational excellence.


In her closing remarks, she congratulated the students, acknowledging their hard work and the commencement of a new and exciting chapter in their lives. With confidence, she urged them to follow their passions, bring positive change to the world, and contribute meaningfully to nation-building.

On this occasion, Uttar Pradesh’s Minister of Higher Education, Shri Yogendra Upadhyaya, expressed his thoughts, stating that this is a festival dedicated to Lord Ganesh, and the entire country is celebrating it this week. He highlighted the historical significance of the festival, mentioning that many years ago, Lokmanya Tilak initiated this celebration to promote a sense of nationalism and unity within society.


Shri Upadhyaya emphasized the importance of education, stating that our education system must foster the spirit of nationalism and remove the obstacles that hinder its development. He added that starting from Maharashtra and Gujarat, now even in Uttar Pradesh, education is playing a key role in advancing national unity and promoting nationalist endeavors. He also pointed out that educational institutions have a vital role in guiding the coming generations in the right direction.


The Minister stressed the cultural unity of India, citing the nation's revered symbols of faith, such as Lord Ram and Lord Krishna, who have bound India together from north to south. He mentioned that Lord Ram united the tribals and forest dwellers, while Lord Krishna is worshiped from the north to Assam, where Rukmini and Krishna are also venerated.
In his concluding remarks, Shri Upadhyaya underlined the significance of such festivals in maintaining the unity and integrity of the nation. He called upon the future generations to be imbued with the spirit of nationalism through education.


Dr. Nilesh M. Desai addressed the 67th Convocation of the University of Lucknow, extending heartfelt greetings to the Hon'ble Chancellor of Uttar Pradesh, the esteemed Chief Guest, the Vice-Chancellor of Lucknow University, and all dignitaries present. Highlighting the significance of World Ozone Day, Dr. Desai stressed the urgent need for environmental awareness and sustainable development, urging graduates to commit to preserving our planet and recognizing the crucial role of the ozone layer. He expressed pride in receiving his degree from the Chancellor of his home state and encouraged students to view failure as a learning experience and a step towards success, emphasizing resilience and persistence. Dr. Desai praised Lucknow University for its effective implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes a flexible, multidisciplinary, and skill-oriented education system. He noted that NEP 2020 will prepare students to innovate and adapt to societal and economic changes.

Concluding, Dr. Desai highlighted the transformative power of education and urged graduates to use their knowledge for personal and societal advancement. He ended with a quote from Mahatma Gandhi: "Education which does not mould character is absolutely worthless," advising graduates to let this principle guide their journey.

Mr. Bhatkar expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing developments in the city, particularly in information technology and quantum technology. He believes that these innovations will exceed our expectations and usher in a new and remarkable era for India.Looking ahead, he emphasized that the future will be defined not by competition among individual countries but by collaboration across nations. The age of collaboration is upon us, and the University of Lucknow is dedicated to celebrating and sharing these advancements. He underscored the importance of education, especially for girls, and expressed his delight at the numerous awards and achievements among female students.

These innovations will surpass expectations and contribute to a new era for India.Hon'ble Governor highlighted that future progress will not be defined by competition among individual countries but by collaborative efforts across nations. She commended the University of Lucknow for its dedication to celebrating and sharing advancements and underscored the importance of education, especially for girls. She congratulated the students who received gold medals and acknowledged the efforts of the University’s faculty and staff in guiding and supporting the students.

She also mentioned the support received from the Prime Minister’s schemes, including the ₹100 crore funding for research and development at the University. This funding will be utilized for enhancing research and educational practices. Smt. Patel expressed her gratitude to Dr. Vijay Pandurang Bhatkar for his contributions and emphasized the need for skilled guidance in education.

In her closing remarks, Hon'ble Governor encouraged the graduates to apply their learning in a meaningful and positive manner, contributing to societal development and nation-building.
