Indian Railways Approves Kavach Version 4.0 for 660 Route Km of Izzatnagar Division at ₹295 Crore
ew Delhi, August 2026:Indian Railways has approved the deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 across 660 route kilometres of the Izzatnagar Division of North Eastern Railway (NER)at an estimated cost of ₹295 crore.
The project has been sanctioned under the umbrella work titled “Provision of Kavach with communication backbone of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) on balance sections of Indian Railways.”
Kavach to Strengthen Railway Safety
Kavach is India’s indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, developed to enhance railway safety by continuously monitoring train movements and helping prevent incidents such as Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) and train collisions.
The system can automatically apply brakes when required and assists trains in operating safely at permissible speeds. It is also designed to support reliable train operations in challenging weather conditions, including dense fog, when visibility is significantly reduced.
Coverage of Izzatnagar Division
The approved project will cover the remaining eligible sections of the Izzatnagar Division of North Eastern Railway. The installation of Kavach Version 4.0 across these 660 route kilometres is expected to further strengthen the division’s safety infrastructure and improve train protection capabilities.
The initiative forms part of Indian Railways’ broader efforts to expand the deployment of indigenous train-protection technology across its network, with modern communication infrastructure playing an important role in supporting safer and more reliable railway operations.
