Max Hospital Lucknow Organizes Heart Health Carnival to Spread Awareness on Cardiac Wellness
Expert Insights on Cardiac Risks
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Nakul Sinha, Chairman – Cardiology, Cardiac Sciences, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow, highlighted the shift in perception about heart diseases. He said that earlier coronary artery disease was largely associated with the elderly, but today it is increasingly affecting adolescents and young adults.
Dr. Sinha emphasized that the rise in risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle has significantly contributed to the early onset of cardiac conditions. He added,Heart failure can occur even when pumping function is preserved. Indians, despite not being visibly overweight, often carry excess visceral fat, which poses a higher risk. In addition, genetic and inherited disorders may also cause sudden and life-threatening rhythm disturbances.”
Silent Heart Attacks – An Overlooked Danger
Dr. Ambukeshwar Singh, Associate Director & Unit Head, Interventional Cardiology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow, spoke about the phenomenon of silent heart attacks. He explained that although less common, such heart attacks may occur without typical warning signs like chest pain or breathlessness, accounting for 5–10% of all heart attack cases, especially among diabetics.
Environmental & Lifestyle Challenges
Prof. Dr. D. Prabhakaran, Executive Director, Centre for Chronic Disease Control (CCDC), discussed the broader health challenges contributing to rising cardiac illnesses. He stated that air pollution alone causes around 1.27 million deaths annually in India, with nearly half linked to cardiovascular diseases. Stressing the role of urbanization, malnutrition, and environmental factors, Dr. Prabhakaran warned that air pollution increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes by up to 48%.
