Lucknow Desk (R.L. Pandey): Medanta Hospital, Lucknow, has recently completed its 100th successful liver transplant, marking a significant milestone in the field of advanced liver care. According to the hospital, this is the highest number of liver transplants performed by a single centre in Central and Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Dr. A.S. Soin, Chairman and Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon at Medanta, Lucknow, said the achievement is a major milestone for Uttar Pradesh and a significant relief for patients from the region. With advanced liver transplant facilities now available at Medanta Lucknow, patients no longer need to travel to other states for specialised treatment.

The transplants have been successfully performed in patients ranging from 3 years to 66 years of age, making them the youngest and oldest patients to undergo liver transplantation at a centre in Central and Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Medanta Lucknow is also recognised for adopting innovative techniques in liver transplant surgery.

Patients from Across Uttar Pradesh and Abroad

Dr. Prashant Bhangui, Senior Director, Liver Transplant Surgery, Medanta Lucknow, said that the largest number of patients—30—were from Lucknow, followed by 16 patients from Gorakhpur. Other patients came from Varanasi, Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Kanpur, Unnao, Mathura and several other districts across Central and Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The hospital has also successfully performed a liver transplant on a patient from Yemen, making it the first international liver transplant of its kind reported in the region. The achievement is expected to contribute to the growth of medical tourism in Uttar Pradesh.

Advanced Treatment for Liver Cancer and Hepatitis

Dr. Abhai Verma, Director, Gastroenterology, Medanta Lucknow, said that liver transplants have also been performed in patients suffering from liver cancer and hepatitis B and C. In selected cases of advanced liver cancer, transplantation can offer a potentially curative treatment.

Medanta Lucknow has advanced technologies including Trans-Arterial Radio Embolization (TARE), Trans-Arterial Chemo Embolization (TACE), PET-CT and External Beam Radiotherapy for managing complex and advanced liver cancer cases, including those involving major blood vessels such as the portal vein.

He added that approximately 14% of the patients had acute liver failure, a condition that is more commonly seen among children and young adults and can require urgent transplantation.

Robotic Surgery Available for Liver Donors

Dr. Kamal Yadav, Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant Surgery, said that advanced robotic technology is now available for liver donor surgery at Medanta Lucknow. More than 17 robotic donor surgeries have been successfully performed.

Robotic surgery can offer benefits such as smaller scars, reduced pain and improved postoperative comfort, along with better cosmetic outcomes.

Alcohol and Fatty Liver Among Major Causes

According to Dr. Vivek Gupta, Senior Consultant and Liver Transplant Surgeon, excessive alcohol consumption was the primary cause of liver damage in 26% of patients, while MASLD (fatty liver disease and its complications) accounted for another 24%.

Dr. Gupta said that fatty liver disease and diabetes are projected to become among the leading causes of liver damage by 2050. He stressed the importance of a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise and proper management of diabetes and cholesterol to reduce the risk of serious liver disease.

Emergency Transplantation Can Be Life-Saving

Dr. Durga Prasad, Principal Consultant, Gastroenterology, Medanta Lucknow, explained that patients suffering from acute liver failure may require an emergency liver transplant within a matter of hours. Without timely intervention, the condition can become fatal.

Such patients are often critically ill, sometimes requiring ventilator support and remaining in a comatose state. In these situations, transplant-related formalities and medical preparations have to be completed rapidly.

Medanta Lucknow has performed a significant number of successful acute liver failure transplants in the region, with encouraging outcomes.

Donors Play a Crucial Role

Medanta Lucknow also expressed its gratitude to all the liver donors and their families who came forward to save the lives of their loved ones.

According to the hospital's data, spouses accounted for 42% of the donors, making them the largest donor group. Sons and daughters donating to their parents accounted for 22%, followed by brothers and sisters at 14%, while mothers donating to their children accounted for 10%. The remaining donors included cousins, nephews and other relatives.

The completion of 100 successful liver transplants at Medanta Lucknow marks an important step forward for advanced liver care in Uttar Pradesh and highlights the growing availability of specialised transplant services within the state.
