Medanta Sets New Benchmark in Spine Surgery with O-Arm Suite in Lucknow
Lucknow, 24 January 2024:  In a major advancement for spine and neurosurgical care in Uttar Pradesh, Medanta has launched the state-of-the-art O-Arm Spine Suite at its Lucknow facility, becoming the first hospital in the city to offer this advanced intraoperative imaging and navigation technology. The introduction of the O-Arm is set to redefine complex spine and cranial surgeries by enabling real-time, high-resolution 2D and 3D imaging within the operation theatre, ensuring safer, faster, and more precise surgical outcomes.

Traditionally, spine and cranial surgeries have relied on MRI or CT scans performed outside the operation theatre. The O-Arm Spine Suite takes surgical precision to the next level by providing surgeons with real-time visualisation during the procedure itself. Often described as a GPS system for the spine, the technology enables accurate identification of anatomical landmarks—even in narrow and highly sensitive areas—significantly enhancing surgical accuracy.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Rakesh Kapoor, Medical Director & Director – Urology and Kidney Transplant Surgery, Medanta, said that the introduction of the O-Arm reflects Medanta’s long-standing commitment to delivering advanced and reliable patient care.“Our focus is to bring globally benchmarked technology to Uttar Pradesh. The O-Arm Spine Suite enhances surgical safety and precision while improving clinical outcomes and reducing recovery time for patients,” he said.

Highlighting the clinical advantages, Dr Kamlesh Singh Bhaisora, Director – Neurosurgery, said the technology marks a paradigm shift in spine and cranial procedures.“Real-time three-dimensional imaging during surgery allows us to confirm accuracy instantly. This leads to smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, shorter operative time, and faster recovery compared to conventional open surgeries,” he noted.

Dr Ravi Shankar, Director – Neurosurgery, emphasized the system’s role in improving safety during complex procedures.“The O-Arm provides continuous navigation support, enabling surgeons to operate with greater confidence and precision, especially in delicate and high-risk anatomical regions,” he said.

From an orthopaedic and spine surgery perspective, Dr Swetabh Verma, Associate Director – Orthopaedics and Spine, said the technology is particularly beneficial for minimally invasive procedures.“With precise implant placement and minimal tissue damage, patients experience less postoperative pain and can often be discharged within two to three days,” he said.

The O-Arm Spine Suite integrates advanced imaging with computer-assisted navigation, streamlining workflow in the operation theatre while also reducing radiation exposure. Medanta officials stated that this cutting-edge technology will benefit patients across Lucknow and neighbouring regions, setting a new benchmark in advanced spine and neurosurgical care.
