Successful Robotic Knee Replacement at Medanta Hospital Enables 78-Year-Old Patient to Walk Independently Again
Mr. Harishchandra Narang had been struggling with chronic knee pain for almost 30 years. As he grew older, his condition progressively worsened, and over the past two years, even routine walking became extremely difficult. Due to pain and weakness, he suffered a fall that resulted in a fracture of the bone just below his left knee. Following the injury, he became almost entirely dependent on others and required assistance with daily activities.
Seeking treatment, Mr. Narang consulted Dr. Saurav Shukla, Joint Replacement and Orthopaedics Specialist at Medanta Hospital. After a comprehensive evaluation, Dr. Shukla recommended knee replacement surgery.
Although the patient and his family were initially apprehensive about undergoing surgery, detailed consultations and an understanding of the benefits of advanced robotic technology helped them make an informed decision.
The procedure marked Dr. Shukla’s 1,000th surgery at Medanta Hospital. Speaking about the achievement, Dr. Shukla highlighted the precision offered by robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery.
“The greatest advantage of robotic technology is its accuracy. It enables surgeons to create a personalized surgical plan based on the patient’s unique knee or hip anatomy, leading to improved joint function and a faster recovery. Our goal is not only to relieve pain but also to help patients regain the active lifestyle they once enjoyed,” he said.
Dr. Shukla further explained that robotic knee replacement often delivers remarkable outcomes, allowing patients to walk independently without support and resume their normal daily routines. Activities that many patients had once considered impossible frequently become achievable again after surgery.
With more than 27 years of experience in joint replacement surgery, Dr. Saurav Shukla has performed over 11,000 joint replacement procedures. Since joining Medanta Hospital, he has successfully completed more than 1,200 joint replacement surgeries, including approximately 750 robotic knee replacement procedures. He is widely experienced in both robotic-assisted and conventional total knee replacement surgery.
Today, Mr. Narang is able to walk confidently without support, demonstrating the transformative impact of advanced robotic joint replacement technology on the quality of life of elderly patients.
