LUCKNOW– In a shocking incident that highlights the persistent danger of banned kite strings, a 35-year-old woman narrowly escaped having her foot amputated. Thanks to a highly complex and timely intervention by specialists at Medanta Hospital, Lucknow, her limb was successfully saved.

A Routine Ride Turns Into a Nightmare

The incident occurred on April 25, 2026, when the woman was riding pillion on a motorcycle with her husband. Out of nowhere, a stray, razor-sharp kite string (manja) became entangled around her foot.

The friction and tension of the string caused catastrophic damage. It sliced deep into her flesh, severing critical nerves and major blood vessels. With the blood supply to her foot completely cut off, she faced an immediate threat of permanent limb loss.

The Medical Challenge: A Rare and Complex Reconstruction

The victim was rushed to Medanta Hospital in critical condition, where a specialized team led by Dr. Nikhil Puri (Director of Plastic Surgery) and Dr. Ashish Ukey (Senior Consultant) took immediate action.

Medical experts noted that while kite string injuries to the neck or face are unfortunately common, such severe trauma to a lower limb is exceptionally rare.

  • The Complication: The vital neurovascular network of the foot was completely shattered.

  • The Operation: Surgeons performed a meticulous, hours-long microvascular surgery to reconnect the severed nerves and repair the damaged blood vessels.

Fortunately, the team successfully restored blood circulation to the foot, avoiding the need for amputation. The patient is currently stable and showing consistent signs of recovery under medical supervision.

"To see a foot sustain this level of trauma from a kite string is highly unusual. Because the blood supply was severely compromised, saving the limb was an uphill task, but our timely surgical intervention proved successful." — Dr. Nikhil Puri, Director of Plastic Surgery, Medanta Lucknow

The Deadly Reality of "Chinese Manja"

This tragic mishap serves as a grim reminder of the threats posed by synthetic and glass-coated kite strings, widely known as Chinese manja. Despite being banned, these nylon-based strings continue to endanger commuters, pedestrians, and wildlife alike.

Government Crackdown and Public Appeal: The Uttar Pradesh government has intensified its statewide crackdown on the illegal sale and distribution of synthetic kite strings. Authorities are urging the public to use traditional cotton threads and strictly report any vendors selling illegal alternatives to ensure public safety.
