Uttar Pradesh desk Lucknow (R L Pandey). On September 7, 2024, the third day of the Deekshaarambh: Student Induction Programme commenced at Malviya Hall, University of Lucknow. This program, designed to welcome newly admitted postgraduate students from the science stream, was inaugurated under the leadership of the Honourable Vice Chancellor, Prof. Alok Kumar Rai. Also in attendance were the Dean of the Faculty of Science and the Dean of Student Welfare.

The event began with the traditional lighting of the lamp and the recital of the university’s Kulgeet (anthem). Honourable Vice Chancellor Prof. Alok Kumar Rai then addressed the students, congratulating them on their admission, and emphasizing that they were part of an elite group chosen from thousands of applicants. He noted that since the implementation of NEP 2020, there has been a significant improvement in students’ success rates in competitive exams, with Lucknow University consistently producing outstanding results in national exams. Prof. Rai stressed that students must have clarity regarding their career paths and should choose subjects they are passionate about rather than settling for any subject.

He urged the postgraduate students to develop competence by acquiring knowledge, skills, and purpose during their academic journey. He emphasized that as master's students, they should strive for excellence in their chosen subjects. A curious mindset is essential for achieving this, and students should engage with everyday life, asking questions about how and why things happen. He pointed out that biology, physics, and chemistry are constantly at work in the world around us and student should learn more about it. He emphasised that while the university provides a degree, mastery in a subject comes from understanding the deeper "why" and "how" behind the material, not just learning theoretical knowledge.

Prof. Rai encouraged students to be confident and stay engaged with the university ecosystem to make full use of campus resources. He advised them to trust their teachers, be empathetic, and show sensitivity toward the institution. The ultimate goal of education, he reminded them, is to become a good human being. He concluded his address by urging students to follow the University of Lucknow’s official social media platforms to stay informed about the latest events.

Following Prof. Rai's speech, the Dean of the Faculty of Science gave a motivational address, encouraging students to strive for excellence. The Dean of Academics provided an overview of the academic framework under NEP 2020, stressing the importance of academic integrity and the use of resources like the Samarth portal. The Chief Proctor explained the code of conduct and expectations for student behavior, emphasizing the importance of upholding the university’s reputation.

The program also highlighted student support services. The Dean of Student Welfare outlined the well-being resources available to students, while the Chief Provost gave an overview of the hostel facilities. The Honorable Librarian provided insights into the Tagore Library’s academic resources. The Director of Sanskritiki encouraged students to engage in cultural activities, and representatives from the NCC and NSS discussed leadership opportunities and national service initiatives.
