‘Reaching for the Sky’: A Celebration of Confidence and Equality through Sports at Prerna Schools

The event was graced by distinguished guests, including Kumari Priya (renowned mountaineer and cyclist from Lucknow and Rani Lakshmibai Awardee), Uma Sharma (Sub-Inspector, 1090; three-time boxing medalist and Rani Lakshmibai Award recipient), and Seema Sharma (Sub-Inspector, Intelligence Department).
The programme commenced with a welcome address, followed by an inspiring speech by the school Principal, Rakhi Panjwani, who motivated the students with her encouraging words. She remarked, “Reaching for the Sky is not just the theme of our Sports Day; it is the spirit of our school. It is inspired by Dr Urvashi Sahni’s book that captures the courage, struggles, and quiet strength of our girls.”

Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Kumari Priya urged parents to treat daughters and sons equally. She said, “When children are given equal opportunities, encouragement, and support without discrimination, they develop the confidence to dream big and move forward in life. This change must begin at home, because meaningful change in society always starts with oneself.”

Dr Urvashi Sahni, CEO of Study Hall Educational Foundation, emphasized the role of education in building an equitable society. She stated, “Education should not prepare children for dominance or submission, but for partnership. Girls must grow up knowing they are equal human beings with the right to dream, decide, and lead. Boys must learn sensitivity and justice, and understand that patriarchy harms them too. When girls and boys learn together with equality and respect, they can create a society where everyone has the freedom to thrive.”

Uma Sharma, Guest of Honour, shared her personal experiences, saying, “Growing up as a girl comes with many challenges, but with support, encouragement, and belief, girls can overcome every obstacle. With the right guidance and opportunities, they can rise confidently and reach heights they once thought impossible.”

Students of Classes 4 and 5 presented the Prerna Constitution, followed by enthusiastic participation in a range of fun and engaging sports activities, including the Balancing Cone Race, Three-Legged Race, Bunny Jump, Saathi Haath Badhana Race, Ring Race, and Balancing Ball.

The Girls’ Drill by students of Classes 1, 2, and 3 and the Boys’ Drill were major highlights and received loud applause from the audience. Special attractions such as the Saree Drill and the Mothers’ Race witnessed enthusiastic participation from parents.

The programme concluded with a grand finale, inspiring addresses by the guests, and a vote of thanks, making the event a memorable celebration of sports, confidence, and equality.
