Airtel Launches AI-Powered "Fraud Alert" to Stop OTP-Based Banking Scams
Closing the Gap on Social Engineering
Modern fraudsters often use psychological pressure, pretending to be from delivery or customer support services, to trick users into sharing banking OTPs. Once shared, the victim's savings are instantly at risk.
Airtel’s new system intervenes exactly when it matters most. By monitoring the network layer, the AI detects when a banking OTP is delivered to a device while the user is simultaneously on a "potentially risky" incoming call. The network then triggers an immediate Fraud Alert, giving the user a critical moment to pause, think, and deny the scammer’s request.
Proactive Security at the Network Level
Shashwat Sharma, Managing Director & CEO of Airtel India, highlighted the company's vision: We are on a mission to make Airtel the safe network... Our newly developed, AI-powered, autonomous solution operates proactively at the network level and is engineered to detect and intervene against fraudulent activity in real-time."
He further noted that extensive trials have shown remarkable accuracy in identifying and stopping these scams before the financial damage occurs.
A Multilayered Defense Strategy
This new feature is the latest addition to Airtel's suite of AI safeguards introduced over the last two years, which include:
-
Spam-Call Warnings: Alerts users of known fraudulent numbers.
-
Malicious Link-Blocking: Automatically preventing users from clicking on dangerous phishing links in SMS.
While Airtel has significantly reduced network-level fraud, this breakthrough addresses the most vulnerable link: human social engineering.
Rollout Schedule
-
Current Status: The solution is already live in Haryana.
-
National Expansion: Airtel plans to roll out the feature to 100% of its customer base across India over the next two weeks.
