Dr RMLIMS contributes in the formation of national official Liver failure Management guidelines

Uttar Pradesh desk Lucknow (R L pandey).Director, Dr. RMLIMS, Prof (Dr.) C.M.Singh, congratulated Dr. Piyush Upadhyay, Paediatric Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist, Dr.RMLIMS for contributing in the prestigious , first official national guidelines for diagnosis and management of liver failure in children and adolescents of Indian Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ISPGHAN). Guidelines got published in the highly reputed international journal “Hepatology International” of Asia Pacific Society for study of Liver disease (APASL) . Dr. Piyush Upadhyay is amongst the 50 experts from around the world who got together and developed the guidelines for the benefit of the society.
Director, Dr. RMLIMS, Prof (Dr.) C.M.Singh told that such guidelines are the need of the hour to standardize the management of liver failure across the nation which will bring down the mortality and morbidity and also the financial burden of the country. He further added that these guidelines will help the nation in dealing with this life threatening problem at levels of care in the country.
Dr. Piyush Upadhyay told that Liver failure in children and adolescents is due to several reasons, but most common among those is Hepatitis A which constitutes about 40% to 50% of all cases. Other causes are Hepatitis E, Hepatitis B, Auto Immune Liver Diseases and Wilson Disease etc. Symptoms of liver failure are easy to pick even by a common man. If any child, adolescent or adult suffering with jaundice or liver damage sleeps more or less than normal, is lethargic, irritable , difficult to awake, stiffening of limbs, unconsciousness means that jaundice is progressing towards liver failure and needs urgent intervention and care.
Apart from Dr. Piyush Updhyay from Dr. RMLIMS, Lucknow, other very senior gastroenterologists’ and hepatologists’ who played pivotal role in developing these guidelines includes Prof. Shiv Kumar Sarin, Prof. Seema Alam, Dr. Bikrant Bihari Lal, Dr. Rajeev Khanna, Dr. Vikrant Sood from ILBS, New Delhi, Dr. Mohd. Rela from Chennai, Dr. Anil Dhawan, from King’s College,London, Dr. Mureshwar Desai from Texas, USA, Dr. Marianne, Dr. Akash Deep from United Kingdom, Dr. Anshu Srivastava and Dr. Moinak S Sharma from SGPGIMS, Lucknow and others.
